Strictly Schools Come Dancing a roaring success!

The female strictly dancers strut their stuff on the dance floor in The Villa Rose

The recent Strictly Schools Come Dancing competition, a joint venture between Finn Valley College, St. Columba’s College and St. Mary’s National School proved to be a roaring success. Not only was there some much needed money for school funds raised for the three schools, but there were also several nights of fun and entertainment to boot! The FVC leg of the competition, held on December 16th in The Villa Rose Hotel will live long in the memory for many reasons.

Feather boas and sequins, cha cha’s and Jives, flying students, fractured limbs, uniforms and dancing clowns, Strictly had it all! Another of the great triumphs of the night was the inclusivity of the entertainment on show. The whole spectrum of the wider school community came together for the big night. The excellent array of dancers were comprised of students and teachers, ex students and parents, while among the audience many more staff and their spouses, students, past students, parents, grand-parents and even children of staff all revelled in the unique atmosphere that continued into the wee small hours.

So much credit must go to everyone involved in the organising of the night, not least the dancers themselves, who must be commended for their bravery and the hours and hours of practice that went on behind the scenes in the weeks leading up to the big night. So brave in fact that one of our dancers, 5th year Bridget Corry actually fractured her ankle in the warm-up yet still managed to continue without anyone knowing! Ms Kennedy and Ms Boland who had to utilise all of their organisaional skills to bring it all together. All those who helped sell tickets or helped on the night in any way, whether it was shaking the buckets or picking up the stray feathers from the floor, it all helped.

The flamboyant MC Mr Noel Cunnigham added his own unique charm to the evenings, ably assisted by his panels of judges.  Dancing tutor Marie for her miracle working. The excellent surroundings and service of The Villa Rose Hotel under Mr Tommy Gallen and his staff provided a wonderful setting. Ms Nicole Sihera who, at extremely short notice, captivated the audience during the interval with her wonderful voice. The ‘Origins of Riverdance’ dancers injected a touch of humour to the night. Thanks are also due to those who sponsored prizes for the draw on the night.

Our team of dancers were- Tiarnan Mc Connell and Vicky Pearson, Mark Gillespie and Bridget Corry, Kelvin Lynch and Rachel Ewing, Mr Mc Daid and Ms Diver, Mr Mc Dermott and Ms Kennedy, Mr Duggan and Ms Charlene Kelly (Past pupil), Mr Kevin Mc Daid (Parent’s representative) and Ms Michelle Connolly and Mr Paul Dooley and Ms Katie Mc Namee (both past pupils). The three couples to advance to the final were Kelvin and Rachel, Mr Duggan and Charlene and Kevin and Michelle, however, everyone on the night were winners.
